Judith J. Gische is being remembered following the end of a distinguished career in New York’s judiciary. Gische served as an Associate Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department, from 2012 until 2022, after previously serving as a New York State Supreme Court Justice and Civil Court judge. Her years of public service made her a notable figure within New York’s legal community.

Her judicial career began decades earlier. Gische was appointed an Acting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court in 1997 and had previously served as a Housing Court Judge and a Civil Court judge. She was elected to the State Supreme Court in 2008 before joining the Appellate Division several years later. Her work across different levels of the judiciary reflected a lengthy commitment to New York’s legal system.

Beyond the courtroom, Gische also had a connection to legal education. The New York courts’ official biography notes that she had served as an adjunct professor at New York Law School since 2004. Her academic involvement added another dimension to a career that combined judicial service with teaching and mentorship within the legal profession.

For colleagues, students and others who knew Judith Gische, remembrance is likely to center on the years she devoted to public service and the people she encountered throughout her professional life. A long judicial career creates many connections, and the influence of a judge can extend beyond individual cases to colleagues, attorneys and younger members of the profession who learn from their experience.

While the available official court records confirm Gische’s distinguished judicial history, they do not establish a current cause of death. As family, friends and members of New York’s legal community reflect on her life, further details about her passing should come from her family or an official obituary. Her years of service remain an important part of the legacy she leaves within New York’s judiciary.
