The New York Police Department has a long history of mourning officers and members of its wider department family who have died by suicide, including a 29-year-old officer whose death occurred near the Staten Island precinct where he worked in June 2019. The loss was acknowledged publicly by then-Police Commissioner James O’Neill, who described the department as facing a mental-health crisis and urged officers to support one another.

The Staten Island death came during a particularly difficult period for the NYPD, when several members of the department had died by suicide within a short period. The circumstances prompted senior police officials to speak openly about the pressures faced by officers and the importance of seeking assistance during moments of personal crisis.

For fellow officers, the death of a colleague can carry a profound emotional weight. Police work often creates strong bonds between people who serve together, and losing one of those colleagues can affect an entire command as well as family members and close friends. The NYPD’s public response emphasized that officers should not feel ashamed about asking for help when they are struggling.

The department has also pointed officers toward resources intended to provide confidential support. In its 2019 message following the Staten Island death, the NYPD listed its Employee Assistance Unit, Chaplains Unit and other crisis-support services, while encouraging officers to reach out for themselves or colleagues who may be in distress.

As the NYPD remembers officers who have died, their colleagues and loved ones are left to preserve their memories beyond the circumstances of their deaths. For the families affected, grief is deeply personal, while for the department, each loss is a reminder of the importance of looking after those who spend their working lives protecting others. The officers who have been lost remain part of the NYPD’s history and are remembered by the people who served alongside them.
